Changing Strategy and Leadership – American Institute of Architects

     Robert Ivy pursued his first degree at the University of the South where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. Later on, he earned his second degree at Tulane University when he started architecture. The AIA College of Fellows recognized him as an architect in 1993. He has also written a book, Fay Jones: Architect, which the AIA helped him publish. He not only sits in four architectural schools but also in a city planning board, including Auburn University’s Rural Studio, Tongji University School of Architecture, Mississippi University, Shanghai Urban Planning Board and Tulane University.

Robert Ivy has been appointed the new CEO/EVP of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA was started in 1857 and has become one of the best professional organizations today. The AIA is highly regarded for representing the needs and desire of the profession in the construction and design industry.

In the early 1990s, Robert Ivy played a major advocate role in dealing with several issues pertaining to the architectural space. It is for this reason that the board found him fit as a dedicated member of the AIA. As the new CEO, Robert would be heading the Washington, DC office. There are more than 200 employees in that branch only. The Washington, DC office is run with an annual budget of $56 million every year.

In 2009, Robert Ivy got the Crane Award to show recognition for the many years he had put in publications for the American Business Media. His has dedicated his life to the editorial process of journals and press in the construction and design industry. In 2010, he was also recognized as Master Architect. This award was presented by Alpha Pho Chi, an architectural fraternity. Robert Ivy joins the league of other highly respected architects like Buckminster Fuller and Pei I.M.

The former president of AIA, George Miller, commented on the appointment of Robert Ivy. He mentioned that Robert Ivy not only showed excelled corporate leadership skills but was also seasoned in the trends of the industry. As such, he was one of the best appointments that the board of AIA had ever made. According to George, Robert was a unanimous choice due to his experience, leadership style, passion and dedication to the AIA over the years.

Robert Ivy has also served as the editor-in-chief of different publications, including the Architectural Record. During his tenure, Architectural Record became one of the most popular publications globally. Robert has also been the vice president of McGraw-Hill Construction Media. In 2003, he also became the editorial director. He has helped this company publish numerous online and prints content that are family oriented and adheres to the standards of editorial quality. Robert is expected to come up with exciting agendas as he chants the way forward for AIA.
